King Lalibela ruled within the Zagwe dynasty, which governed much of the northern Ethiopian highlands before the Solomonic restoration of 1270. His reign is inseparable from traditions of sanctity, visions, royal patronage, and church building. Documentary certainty is limited, however, and later hagiography shaped the king remembered today.
